Salt Spring Island is one of expansive views over ocean inlets and rugged coastline, where eagles soar and deer meander nonchalantly down the roads. Historically, many came here to start a new life free of societal constraints, attracting people from different cultures and for many now, this rural island, represents a similar ideal. Galleries, restaurants, theaters and shops abound and there is lots to do with golf courses, hiking trails, parks and a choice of several lakes to swim in.

Explorer James Douglas wrote in 1853 that the discovery of the salt springs on the island would "become a wealth to the country". This has borne out to be true but not in the way he meant.
